Chapter 6
Company
Cody worked fence with Barstowe thinking about what was happening. All the older ladies and soon even the younger ones, would believe he and Ethel were a couple. Heâd hoped they would be eventually but dealing with the fallout when it wasnât really true seemed unfair. Somehow, he needed to use this to move their relationship forward. It made him smile as he thought about all the ways he could.
The fence work went well as it usually did. Knowing what to do and how to do it helped with any task a person attempted. Cody knew Will, her mates and her team having met them several times through Damon. Theyâd also been questioned by the council more than once and heâd helped them move forward every time. Would they help him now?
It was getting close to lunch and with the feast Ethel had planned, she wouldnât be coming to get them. âShould we go for lunch, so it wonât all be gone?â Barstowe asked.
Barstowe knew them better than he did so he nodded in agreement. âAre they really that bad?â
âTheyâre all supes and they all have extreme appetites.â
âIn other words, yes. If they arenât there, we can always help Ethel a bit.â
âSure, we can, after we eat.â
âShouldnât we wait for our guests to arrive?â Cody asked.
âItâs easy to forget you are a politician until you say stuff like that.â Barstowe laughed. âLetâs just get there.â
Everything was put up and they headed to the house. As luck would have it, they arrived just as Will and her team did. Both her mates were also with her. âHello, Cody.â Will greeted. âI think you know my team and my mates?â
âI do. It looks like we better get in line before all the food is gone if itâs not already too late.â Cody observed.
Will whistled. âThere are other guests. Go to your seats with what you have and let other people get some food.â
He was surprised when they did it. Several took whole cakes with them. Will said nothing and he looked at her in surprise. âEthel made those smaller cakes for certain ones.â
That explained some of the comments Ethel had made about certain cakes or pies. Barstowe sat eating his food. Heâd gotten his before anyone had gotten in line. At least it seemed that all the foods were still available, but the desserts were decimated. There was plenty to eat, but only certain kinds. There had been a few heâd wanted to try that were gone. Maybe sheâd made them specifically for Willâs team that Ethel called her boys.
âYouâll have to fight for your food while the boys are here.â Will whispered to him.
âHey, I heard that.â Tilt said.
âSo?â Will asked.
Cody had a feeling she just didnât want Ethel to hear it. And he could see why. She might feel bad, like sheâd not cooked enough which shouldnât be true with the table piled high. But it was clear Barstoweâs advice was good, and heâd follow it next time. These guys werenât wolves, they were pigs.
